A happy group of people enjoy the day, right down to the last minutes of dusk, as the warm, welcoming lights come on, promising comfort and good memories of a fine day spent.
"... Richard watched the happy people playing on the beach. It was getting darker by the minute but they didn't care. They were having the best time, and a little dusk wasn't going to stop them.
He watched, and yet he felt no lightness in his heart. It used to feel good, it used to make him smile to watch others having fun. He'd had plenty himself, and it brought back nice memories... usually. But tonight it wasn't working. He was thinking of her, and he ached.
It wasn't supposed to be like this, their new arrangement. How was he supposed to feel? Where could he put his mind that was a safe place? Where could he escape to that wasn't so painful? He was here, she was there, but then... so was he. How did this happen?
Richard stretched deeply, hoping to work out the tightness growing in his neck and shoulders. It didn't work. He turned on the TV and flipped channels for a while. It made him angry. He could find no safe haven for his hurting heart tonight. It hurt more and more, not less and less. The aching, the longing... the pain... Karma? ..."
